Stay On Track With One App

Windows 8.1 Apps

This post has been written as part of my involvement with the Microsoft Connections Program.

Windows 8.1 comes with some fantastic built in apps:

  • Health & Fitness
  • Food & Drink
  • Travel
  • Reading List
  • News
  • Sport
  • Finance
Plus there are over 150,000 apps to choose from the Windows App store which is more than enough to keep you busy and entertained. Some are free and some you do have to pay for.

Windows 8.1 Health & Fitness App

I know many of you are fitness orientated and if you’re like me then you probably use a few apps and programs to keep track of where you are at and how you are doing.

With Windows 8.1 you can sync everything into the free Bing Health & Fitness app.

To start off you personalise the app to set it to your own health & fitness goals.
You can then add other users (family members) once you connect the app to ‘HealthVault‘.

Exercise, Diet and Health Trackers
The Health & Fitness app includes several trackers that are an efficient and streamlined way to monitor your exercise and diet. What’s even better is you can sync most of your devices to this app. I have just connected my Fitbit and Garmin devices so I can keep track of all my training in the one place.
Think of it as your own little fitness cloud if you like.

You can search through many articles written by professionals on a variety of topics such as fitness, medical, news and nutrition. I personally love the running ones, they are full of helpful tips and ways to keep me motivated as I work towards my marathon goal.

Also, the diet tracker holds a food database which you can enter just about any food or drink known to mankind. It will give you the calories per serving, and you can add it to your diet tracker if you are keeping a daily record of your food intake. It also gives you the nutritional value of the food you have entered and what percentage it will consume of your daily calorie allowance. This is certainly handy if you have daily target macros to maintain for your training.

Click + Compare and literally a split screen will show you the difference
between apples and oranges. Or riesling and champagne!
Dear Windows 8.1: One complaint, wine really should contain zero calories in my perfect world.
Another fantastic feature of the app are the workout videos.
Let’s face it everyone is busy, gym memberships are rising, so why not exercise at home? These workouts range in intensity levels and start from just 10 minutes. I really need to use my foam roller more to iron out those knots and strains from running long distances, but I get a little lazy with it. Now I just turn the video on and in 15 minutes I’ve completed my foam rolling.

Easy, Simple, and I didn’t have to search the Web for hours to find the one I wanted.
There are other super cool features too like the Symptom Checker and 3D Body tool. I wish I had access to this when I was doing my Nursing degree, it would have made Human Biology so much more interesting then leafing through my huge anatomy and physiology bible.
For those who are interested in losing a few kilos the app includes a breakdown of all the top diets and their pros and cons. You can also keep track of your weight loss progress via the My Health Tracker option. This tracker also allows you to monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol and even keeps you on track with your vaccinations.
If you have a Windows phone you will be able to add your data into there too. This makes it even easier to read an article on the go and update your food and exercise trackers.
Upgrade to Windows 8.1 today and you will have instant access to this free health & fitness app.

What are you favourite health & fitness apps? Or are you old school and love to write it all down?
