DIY Advent Calendar

DIY advent calendar

OK, so it may be a little late to be posting this on December 1st. Sorry.

But this DIY Advent Calendar really is so simple and easy that you could have it up ready to go today.

In the past, I have always bought the chocolate advent calendars for all the kids at Christmas time. I used to try and remember to buy them early in November because the stores always ran out by the time I usually thought to get them – November 30th.

This year I wanted to do something a little different for Maggie as I will be away for 9 days living it up in Dubai. So to ease that motherguilt of mine I wanted to do something special and she is just SO EXCITED about Christmas.

We put the tree up on Saturday and on Sunday morning she ran to check it to see if there were any presents yet, cue meltdown and it was only 5.30 am.

What you need

  • a long branch
  • fishing wire and some hooks to hang the branch on.
  • 24 presents – see below for some easy ideas for kids.
  • wrapping paper, ribbon, twine.
  • decorate your gifts with last year’s Christmas cards or stickers.
  • Numbers – I used wooden pegs with the number stuck onto them.

This is for the day after I’ve left for Dubai – Mummy who?!?

But each present is different …

simple Christmas gift ideas  Most days were simple – Playdough, lolly and a sheet of stickers.

Tip: Brown paper bags make wrapping super quick and easy.

Maggie rarely gets a chocolate or a lolly pop and there isn’t one in each gift which I’m sure we will hear about. But it’s Christmas!

We used two screws and some fishing wire to hang the branch which was approx 1.5m long.

Best. Mum. Ever.

Particular planning went into the order of the presents. For the days that I am in Dubai, there is the messy stuff like paints, gluing and baking but for the day I get home there is a book for us to read together. Who knows? maybe I just started a new Christmas tradition in our household this year. It was a lot of fun to make and I just know Maggie will look forward to opening her special gift each day.

Are you ready for Christmas?

I was looking for a way to display my collection of Christmas Ornaments, without putting up a tree that the cat can climb. Your branch at the top of the wall is perfect for the project. Thanks for the idea. (No kids, so I don’t need the presents)

Can you tell me what type of evergreen that branch was? It looks perfect for hanging things and decorating the wall without being too full of needles.
